The World as Palestine | العالم فلسطين: الشعر عبر اللغات والترجمة والشتات
*LIMITED SEATING, PLEASE REGISTER HERE*
When the entire world becomes remnants and memories of a lost homeland, how does one reconstruct the self and its language(s) in poetry? Join us for this poetry reading at the Kelly Writers House with two Palestinian poets of the diaspora, Olivia Elias and Ahmad Almallah, who write in French and English respectively. They will be joined by translators Sarah Riggs (to English) Huda Fakhreddine (to Arabic) to read Palestine across languages and translation.
Olivia Elias will be reading Chaos, Crossing, translated by Kareem James Abu Zeid, and Your Name Palestine, translated by Sarah Riggs and Jeremy V. Robert.
Ahmad Almallah will be reading from Bitter English (University of Chicago Press, 2019) and his forthcoming Border Wisdom (Winter Editions, 2023). Copies of both books will be available at the event.
Sarah Riggs is the translator of the forthcoming Your Name Palestine
and Huda Fakhreddine, moderating the session, is the translator of selections from Ahmad’s poetry titled كأغنية على تلة (Like a Chant on a Hill), forthcoming from Dar Almutawassit.
This event is sponsored by the Liu Program.
