Consumption and Production of Culture Behind Bars | استهلاك الثقافة وإنتاجها خلف القضبان
Carceral systems have consistently worked to hinder prisoners’ cultural and academic life. This hindrance isn’t merely a ban on books, education, creation… it’s an imposed mental incarceration meant to impede movements and struggles from Palestine to the world. Despite this, prisoners have found ways to engage in thought, make art, and produce knowledge through acts of smuggling, writing, holding teaching circles, or engaging in politics from captivity.
In this panel, two former female Palestinian prisoners, Khalida Jarrar and Mayss AbyGhosh, are joined by international human rights and peace activist Michael Simmons. Moderated by Alexa Firat.
