HAKAWATI: Palestinian Feminism Before the Word “Feminism” | حكواتي: النسوية الفلسطينية قبل أن تصير النسوية مصطلحاً
Palestinian women have played – and continue to play – a distinct and instrumental role in Palestine’s resistance to imperialism and settler colonialism. Like most things in Palestine, the story of its women and their role in our struggle takes numerous twists and turns. This story takes us from the halls of the Syrian congress in 1920 all the way to the Palestinian countryside during the peak of the Great Revolt.
Historian and Hakawati Bassam Abunnadi will take us through parts of this little told history.
Although Palestinian women agitated within the Ottoman framework centuries before this story, for simplicity, the tale will begin during a heated exchange in 1919 at the Syrian Congress of the short-lived Arab Kingdom of Syria.
